Martin Mere revisited 60 years later.

Around 12,000 years ago, Lancashire was a wet landscape of rivers, streams and lakes. Martin Mere was later drained using steam pumps in the 1800s, creating rich farmland.

Sand was later quarried from the old lake bed at Mere Sands Wood, which is now a nature reserve.

Local legend says the lake was home to Vivian, who raised Lancelot beneath the water. Today, part of the old lake is Martin Mere Wetland Centre, managed by the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust.
